Ala. Senators Say Prorate Pay, But Don't Repeal Raise

Montgomery, AL – Efforts to repeal the Legislature's pay raise appear dead.

Gov. Robert Bentley supports rolling back the pay hike lawmakers voted themselves four years ago. Instead, Republican and Democratic leaders in the Senate are backing a resolution that says starting in 2012, compensation will be cut when the governor has to cut state spending.

The resolution could come up for a Senate vote on Thursday.

Republican Sen. Gerald Dial introduced a separate resolution Tuesday to repeal the 61 percent pay raise enacted in 2007, but he couldn't get it to a vote. Republican Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh says Dial's resolution could put the Senate in a stalemate.

Senate Minority Leader Roger Bedford says the Republican majority has told Democrats that repealing the pay raise is off the table.
