IRS Says Thousands In Ala. Due Refunds From 2007

Birmingham, AL – Internal Revenue Service officials say there could be as many at 17,600 people in Alabama may be due refunds from taxes paid in 2007.

But those people have not received refunds because they did not file tax returns for 2007. IRS officials estimated that more than $15 million could be owed in refunds. The law allows a three-year window to receive a refund. That means tax returns must be filed by April 18, 2011 to receive a refund on the 2007 taxes.

IRS officials said refund checks would be held if taxpayers have not filed returns for 2008 and 2009.

The IRS estimates that half of the refunds due Alabama taxpayers are for $640 or more.
