N. Ala. Students Plan Protest Over Athletics

Florence, AL – Students at the University of North Alabama plan a protest to coincide with a meeting of the board of trustees.

Cory Hamilton, outgoing president of the Student Government Association, says the protest planned for Monday is in response to the discussion of moving university athletics from NCAA Division II to Division I.

Last month UNA students voted on the issue, with 58 percent saying they don't support the proposal. Also, 70 percent said they'd be unwilling to pay the increased athletic fee.

Students now pay a $12-per-semester athletic fee. A move would raise the fee to between $120 and $150 each semester.

UNA President Bill Cale says no other method being discussed would cover the cost.

He said he has no objection to a peaceful protest.
