Huntsville, AL – An attorney for the former university professor charged with killing three colleagues in Huntsville hopes prosecutors won't seek the death penalty against his client.
Prosecutors say grand jurors have indicted Amy Bishop on a capital murder charge and three attempted murder charges in last year's shooting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She's accused of opening fire during a faculty meeting in a classroom building, killing three and wounding three.
A lawyer for Bishop, Roy Miller, said Wednesday he hopes prosecutors don't seek the death penalty. He says the length and complexity of a death penalty case only makes things harder for the families of the victims and the defendant, and appeals can take years.
No hearing dates are set, but Miller is considering an insanity defense.
