Atlanta, GA – The Atlanta-based Southern Co. says it supports President Barack Obama's call for a safety review of all the country's nuclear power plants.
Obama said Thursday that he's ordering a review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in light of a crisis at a nuclear power plant in Japan. At least three of that plant's reactors have suffered at least partial meltdowns after a tsunami wave knocked out the backup generators used to run plant cooling systems.
Obama called nuclear power an ``important part'' of the country's energy future.
The Southern Co. operates six nuclear reactors in Georgia and Alabama.
Southern Co. spokeswoman Valerie Hendrickson said the firm fully supports the safety review and remains committed to building two more reactors at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro.
