TVA Backs Browns Ferry Nuclear Reactor Design

Decatur, AL – The Tennessee Valley Authority is expressing confidence in the safety of its nuclear reactors, including the Browns Ferry plant in Alabama.

The Browns Ferry plant - has the same General Electric reactor design, the Boiling Water Reactor Mark I, as the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant in Japan.

The reactors at the Fukushima plant were damaged by a huge earthquake, followed by a tsunami.

TVA Chief Operating Officer Bill McCollum says he's confident the authority's reactors are safe, but TVA will seek to learn from the problems in Japan. He says it's too early to assess the impact of the reactor damage there.
