Montgomery, AL – The Alabama House has voted to ban texting while driving.
A bill banning texting cleared the House on a 86-2 vote Thursday and now goes to the Senate, where similar legislation died last year.
The bill's sponsor, Republican Rep. Jim McClendon of Springville, said the legislation would save lives. But an opponent, Democratic Rep. Alvin Holmes of Montgomery, said police will use it as a reason to stop people and issue more tickets.
The Governors Highway Safety Association says 30 states already ban texting while driving.
