Montgomery, AL – Action has been delayed on a bill that would stop elective abortions from being performed in Alabama at 20 weeks into the pregnancy.
The bill passed the House 69-19 earlier this month and was to be voted on by the Senate Health Committee on Wednesday. But there were not enough senators at the meeting to conduct business.
The meeting was delayed on a day that saw some legislators away from the State House checking on damage in their districts caused by destructive storms in Alabama. The committee earlier held a public hearing that attracted about 100 people to hear debate on the controversial issue.
The sponsor has said the 20-week limit is based on research about when an unborn child can feel pain.
