Last Cooperating Legislator Takes Witness Stand

Montgomery, AL – A former state representative from Dothan, Houston County District Judge Benjamin Lewis, says indicted state Sen. Harri Anne Smith was initially opposed to having an electronic casino in Dothan.

Lewis testified in Alabama's gambling corruption trial Tuesday. He said he and Smith met with Gov. Bob Riley and Attorney General Troy King in March 2008 to try to stop Country Crossing casino from being built in Dothan.

Lewis is the last of three legislators who helped the FBI with its investigation of Statehouse corruption to take the witness stand. Court documents say he taped Smith for the FBI.

Smith is accused of taking bribes to support pro-gambling legislation designed to protect Country Crossing and other casinos that are now closed.

Riley appointed Lewis to his judgeship in June 2010.
