Ala. Supreme Court Chief Justice Resigning Post

Montgomery, AL – Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb says she will resign Aug. 1 to spend more time with her family.

Flanked by her husband, Cobb, 55, read from a prepared statement during a 15-minute press conference. She did not take questions.

Cobb, the state's first female chief justice, noted her mother is 87 years old and that her daughter, Caitlin is 15. She is looking forward to entering a new phase of her life.

She also cited financial difficulties facing the state's court system and her frustration with not being able to persuade the Legislature to change the way Alabama elects judges. Cobb prefers a nonpartisan system.

Cobb urged Gov. Robert Bentley to appoint an experienced trial lawyer to replace her on the bench.
