Craven Chosen As Interim Alabama Schools Leader

Montgomery, AL – The attorney for the Alabama Board of Education, Larry Craven, has been named to serve as interim state schools superintendent beginning Sept. 1.

The state board voted Tuesday to make Craven the interim superintendent beginning Sept. 1. Superintendent Joe Morton has said he is retiring on Aug. 31.

Board members said Craven would make at least $150,000 a year as interim superintendent and would not be a candidate to be permanent superintendent.

The board voted to name Craven interim superintendent at the beginning of a meeting called to discuss the search for a new superintendent.

Morton previously served as superintendent of schools in Sylacauga and has been in charge of state schools for the past seven years.
