State Senator Promises Bill To Undo New Immigration Law

Montgomery, AL – A state senator says he wants the Legislature to repeal a new law that has been called the toughest crackdown in the country on illegal immigrants.

Democratic Sen. Billy Beasley of Clayton said it will cost cash-strapped state government millions of dollars to enforce the wide-ranging law that makes it illegal to transport or provide shelter for illegal immigrants.

Beasley said the new law - which takes effect Sept. 1 - Is already harming Alabama businesses that use immigrant workers.

Beasley said he plans to pre-file the bill so that it can be considered at the start of the 2012 session. He said he hopes leadership will allow debate on his proposal in the Republican-controlled Senate. Republicans heavily backed the immigration bill last session.
