Prosecutors Want Casino Owner On Trial Oct. 31

Montgomery, AL – Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to schedule the retrial of VictoryLand casino owner Milton McGregor for Oct. 31.

Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on some charges against McGregor and six other defendants last week. U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson set Oct. 3 for the retrial of all seven.

The U.S. Justice Department filed court papers Wednesday night asking that defendants be divided for retrial, with McGregor and former legislative employee Ray Crosby going on trial Oct. 31. The trial for Sen. Harri Anne Smith would follow in January, and then the trial for the other four defendants. The department says separate trials would be shorter and more likely to resolve the remaining charges.

The judge has given defense attorneys until Monday to respond.
