Birmingham, AL – The first day of budget hearings in financially strapped Jefferson County has concluded with some department heads asking for more money.
Commissioner Jimmie Stephens, who is overseeing the hearings, said Monday that county leaders have identified about $60 million in cuts, leaving about $43 million more in needed reductions.
Some department heads came to the hearing looking to restore and increase their spending plans.
Finance Director Jeff Hager asked for the return of a senior accountant, saying it would have a big impact on the county's ability to stay current on transactions.
Sheriff Mike Hale is among those planning to make a case on Tuesday to maintain their budgets.
