Montgomery, AL – Alabama, New York and Florida are the only states that receive grades of ``A'' in a new study that looks at how states teach the civil rights movement to students.
The study released Tuesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery looked at each state's requirements in its education standards and compared that to what civil rights historians and educators consider core information about the civil rights movement.
The study gave an ``F'' to 35 states. It said too many students hear only about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. in their school history classes.
The study also found that the amount of attention paid to the civil rights movement usually declined in states farther from the South and in states with small African-American populations.
