Storms Leave Thousands Without Power In Ala.

Auburn, AL – Strong storms have left thousands of people without electricity in central Alabama, and state officials are rushing to Auburn to assess damage there.

Alabama Power Co. says storms knocked out service to about 34,000 customers in the Montgomery, Auburn and Opelika areas on Wednesday. Crews are on the way from other parts of the state to help restore lines.

Storms damaged power lines earlier in the day in the Demopolis area, but the utility says service already has been restored there.

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency says workers are checking on damage in east Alabama. Reports indicate that the damaged area includes a mobile home park, an apartment complex and a retail development. There are no reports of major damage to Auburn University.
