Calera, AL – The National Weather Service confirms that at least two tornadoes hit Alabama on Wednesday, and the total could go higher.
Forecasters said Thursday an EF-2 tornado with winds up to 120 mph struck Sumter County, injuring one person, destroying one home and damaging seven other residences. The twister left a path of destruction more than a mile long and 600 yards wide.
Only minutes later, forecasters say a weaker tornado with winds up to 85 mph hit Demopolis. That twister damaged about 20 homes and several businesses, leaving a track that's about 250 yards wide and 2.5 miles long.
The weather service has teams out assessing damage in other areas, including Auburn. Authorities there say an apparent tornado damaged dozens of mobile homes and other structures. No one was hurt.
