Montgomery, AL – Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley says federal grant money has been approved to build 160 safe rooms in homes in five Alabama counties to make homes safer during inclement weather.
Bentley said Tuesday the state received about $613,000 for the safe rooms in homes in Bibb, DeKalb, Franklin, Walker and Winston counties. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program approved the money because of the April 27 tornadoes that ravaged the state.
Bentley said the state received more than 1,000 applications from people who want to build the safe rooms. The governor said the grants would help Alabama residents make their homes safer. He said he expects the awarding of more grants to be announced.
