Living Memorial For Tornado Victims Taking Shape

Phil Campbell, AL – Four new trees are taking root and more are planned in Phil Campbell, where the scars of an April 27 tornado are still evident along the more than 100-mile path of destruction left by the twister.

Shoals Master Gardeners will soon plant more than two dozen trees around the town to serve as a memorial to the tornado victims.

The tornado killed 26 people in Franklin County.

The initial four trees -- two pin oaks and two brandy wine maples -- were planted in a memorial park being built on Alabama Highway 13 across from Phil Campbell High School.

Bruce Foreman, an organizer of the memorial effort, said the park will honor tornado victims and veterans. A fountain and benches are also planned for the park.
