Birmingham, AL – A leading business group in Alabama's largest city is calling for major changes in the state's new law against illegal immigration.
The Birmingham Business Alliance said Tuesday that employers in its seven-county region are worried about effects of the law at a time when the economy already is uncertain. The group also says business leaders believe the law doesn't ``reflect the values of fairness and compassion embraced by Alabama citizens.''
The organization says it's worried that the law is tainting Alabama's image and perception, both nationally and internationally. The Business Alliance didn't call for any specific revisions, but it's concerned about potential penalties for employers under the law and the burden on local governments.
The group says changes should be made in the upcoming legislative session.
