Birmingham, AL – Jefferson County officials say they plan to eliminate hundreds of jobs, and the reductions will begin in January.
County Commissioner Jimmie Stephens says the cuts will be permanent. Officials said they will include some current employees and some employees on leave without pay.
Stephens said officials did everything they could to avoid the job losses.
Authorities said county department heads have compiled a list of job classes and the number of positions that will be eliminated. That information could be turned over to the Jefferson County Personnel Board as early as this week to make sure the job reductions are implemented in compliance with state law.
It was unclear exactly how many workers would lose their jobs because the list is not complete.
