Ala. State Senator Again Plans Smoking Ban Bill

Montgomery, AL – An Alabama senator plan to again push comprehensive legislation in the upcoming session of the Alabama Legislature to allow voters to decide if they want to ban smoking in most public places in the state.

Democratic Sen. Vivian Davis Figures of Mobile said Monday she will introduce a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban smoking in places of employment, public places and private clubs.

Figures has tried for a number of years to pass bills restricting smoking in public places, but she has not had success. Her legislation passed the Senate several times but could not gain enough support to pass in the Alabama House.

She said she is particularly concerned about the effect second-hand smoke has on children, causing respiratory infections and other problems.
