Montgomery, AL – The lead prosecutor in Alabama's gambling corruption case has pulled out of the retrial because he's taking a new job.
Justin Shur has resigned as deputy chief of the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section to join a Washington law firm. Shur filed papers with the federal court in Montgomery announcing his withdrawal from the case. The retrial of seven defendants starts Jan. 30.
Shur worked on several big cases at the Justice Department, including the cases of former presidential candidate John Edwards and former White House official David Safavian. He is now working for the MoloLamken law firm.
The judge in the case approved Shur's withdrawal Wednesday.
