Ala. Proposal Would Allow New Bike Turn Signaling

Montgomery, AL – A proposal passed by the Alabama Senate on Thursday would allow cyclists to signal a right turn with their right hand, something state law currently doesn't permit.

State law requires bicyclists follow the same rules of the road as automobiles when possible. If a car has no turn signal, the driver must use their left hand out of the window to indicate a turn.

Birmingham Democratic Sen. Linda Coleman changed the measure to exempt children under the age of 16 from needing to use hand signals. She says children shouldn't be penalized for trying to have fun.

The bill by Tuscaloosa Republican Sen. Gerald Allen passed 24-0. Some senators questioned whether the measure is necessary. It still must pass the House and be signed by the governor to become law.
