Montgomery, AL – State officials and Alabama residents learned a lesson last spring - just because your state has been hit by a series of devastating tornadoes killing about 250 people doesn't mean everybody will feel sorry for you.
In fact, some looters were willing to come from out-of-state to loot homes and steal what valuables Mother Nature did not take in the storm.
Because of that experience, Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange is asking the Legislature to pass a tough new bill that makes looting a crime that can send a violator to prison for up to 10 years.
Strange said Thursday at a Statehouse news conference the law would only be enforced if the governor had declared a state of emergency.
