Bill Would Make Motorists Move Over For Utilities

Montgomery, AL – Motorists would have to move over one lane for stopped utility vehicles under a bill passed by the Alabama Senate Thursday.

The measure requires Alabama drivers to move one lane to the left if a utility vehicle is stopped while making repairs or doing official business. State law already requires motorists to move over if law enforcement or emergency vehicles are stopped on the side of the road.

Bill sponsor Sen. Dick Brewbaker says workers repairing power lines are in the same danger as police officers making a traffic stop and it makes sense that drivers should pull over to give them space.

If a driver fails to pull over, he or she would be fined $25 for the first violation, $50 for the second and $100 for the third.
