Montgomery, AL – Revelers at festivals, city-sponsored parties and similar events would be allowed to walk from venue to venue with open containers of alcohol under a measure approved by the Alabama House of Representatives on Wednesday.
The measure would allow cities to create special entertainment districts where people can openly drink alcoholic beverages outdoors without violating state liquor laws.
Bill sponsor Rep. James Buskey, a Democrat from Mobile, says it will help cities draw tourists. He says it will also allow diners at cafes with sidewalk patios to enjoy a glass of wine without violating the law.
The proposal originally allowed for two entertainment districts in any city, but was expanded to five at the insistence of Birmingham lawmakers.
Any district created would have to be approved by the local city government.
