At the 2004 Aspen Music Festival, NPR's Fred Child takes the stage with the young Jupiter Quartet: violinists Meg Freivogel and Nelson Lee, Liz Freivogel (Meg's sister) on viola, and cellist Daniel McDonough.
The quartet, formed in Cleveland in 2001 and now based in Boston, is part of this summer's Aspen Festival Advanced Quartet Program. Only two young quartets are chosen to participate in the prestigious program each summer; Jupiter was also selected in 2003.
In May, Jupiter won the Grand Prize in the New England Conservatory's 2004 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition -- an award that comes with $8000 in prize money and a fully supported international tour, including a stop at Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy.
The members of the quartet talk to Child about how they formed and what the future holds for the talented musicians. They perform the final movement Franz Joseph Haydn's Quartet Op. 76 No. 5 and the opening movement from Felix Mendelssohn's Quartet Opus 13 No. 2.
