Remnants of Karen drench coastal Mississippi

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) — Pascagoula police say driving rain swamped about a dozen city streets as remnants of Tropical Storm Karen passed by. Lt. Vernon Smith says streets flooded on Sunday included U.S. 90 and Market Street. He says officers barricaded Market Street after the wake from traffic flooded a sandwich shop. Smith says he called his wife in D'Iberville, 22 miles away, and she said it wasn't even raining. And 25 minutes after the rain ended in Pascagoula, the streets were clear. National Weather Service meteorologist Gavin Phillips says Pascagoula got about 2 ½ inches of rain in about three hours from the storm's outer edge. He says rain was heavy from Pascagoula into Alabama, but the rest of the Mississippi Coast got little or no rain.
