TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Investigators are warning that an unknown scammer is targeting people in Tuscaloosa. The sheriff's office said a man identifying himself as a deputy sheriff calls potential victims and claims they have failed to appear for jury duty. The suspect then demands payment, and he refuses requests to meet in person. The scammer claims his victims will be arrested if they do not pay. Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Andy Norris told The Tuscaloosa News that the caller is not a law enforcement official. He said the sheriff's office never asks for money in exchange for dismissing an arrest warrant.
