Automakers are taking big risks on "green" cars — vehicles that run entirely or mostly on electric power. They've bet heavily that this is exactly what American drivers want.

Bill Vlasic is covering the Detroit Auto Show for The New York Times. He calls the carmakers' gamble on green cars "risky." If you're in the market for a more efficient vehicle, will you consider an electric car?
