MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Jay Gogue may return to Auburn University as interim president after Steven Leath's resignation.

The executive committee of the board of trustees voted Sunday to recommend that the former university president temporarily lead the school during a full search for a replacement.

Gogue retired after 10 years as the university's president in 2016.

As AL.com reports , under Gogue's tenure, Auburn's graduation rate rose and the school became the first in the state to raise $1 billion in a fundraising campaign.

His nomination as interim president will go before the full board of trustees on July 8.

The committee also formally accepted Leath's resignation as university president Sunday after announcing the mutually agreed upon separation Friday.
