Alabama is expecting to spend most of its COVID-19 relief funds by the end of the year.

State records show that $818 million of the allocated $1.8 billion has not been spent, but state finance director Kelly Butler said it will be used by the Dec. 30 deadline. If the deadline is not met, the money must be returned to the federal government.

Butler said the state is working on a backlog of reimbursemen requests from local governments and that what remains will amount to $10 million.
