Legislators are starting to review the state's newest prison building plans.

The proposal includes the construction of three new facilities and renovation of others. Funding would partially be covered by $400 million from American Rescue Plan Act funds.

House budget chairman Republican Rep. Steve Clouse helped draft the proposal and said it received a positive reaction from lawmakers. Democratic Rep. Chris England said if the state goes along with the plan it will just be putting old problems into new buildings unless additional reforms are made.

Legislators might meet this fall in a special session to vote on the plan.
