Alabama will be working directly with companies to build newly-approved prisons, instead of opening up the bidding process.

The building plans were signed into law by Gov. Kay Ivey last week and will use $400 million pandemic relief money. The construction will cost $1.3 billion total.

Lawmakers said bypassing the bidding process will allow the state to incorporate prior work with companies, saving time and money.
