January execution date for Alabama man convicted in slaying

criminal-defense-network.com

A man convicted of killing someone in 1996 is set to be executed in January.

On Thursday the Alabama Supreme Court set the lethal injection for Matthew Reeves. Reeves was sentenced to death for killing Willie Johnson in Dallas County. Prosecutors said Johnson gave Reeves a ride after his car broke down. Reeves then stuck a shotgun through the rear window of the truck cab and fatally shot Johnson in the neck.

Attorneys for Reeves argued in earlier court filings that he has IQ in the 60s and that his trial counsel failed to do enough to prove he is intellectually disabled.
