Alabama State Health Officer Scott Harris confirmed Thursday that the state recorded its first case of the omicron variant of COVID-19.

He said once it spread into neighboring states, officials assumed it was in Alabama. The variant causes less sever illness but Harris warned that scientists are still learning about it.

Case numbers and hospitalizations for COVID-19 have gone up in Alabama recently. Harris urged those who are eligible to get vaccinated and a booster shot.
