Severe weather expected for much of the state

It looks like Alabama is in for some rough weather the rest of this week. It starts this afternoon with some strong winds across much of the state and heavy rain with possible isolated tornadoes. Jason Holmes is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham. He says the central part of the state is particularly at risk.

“This is when we do have a chance for some strong to severe storms across all of central Alabama. We have the slight risk of severe weather generally just to the northwest of Montgomery to Alexander City, so along the areas into the northwest which includes, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden.”

He says there are plenty of tools available to keep people alert.

“A weather radio is what we recommend, that could wake you up at night. There is also many cell phone apps you can put on your phone, many of those are free. A good source of that is local TV stations for example. In addition to that wireless emergency alerts are available on all modern cell phones and those will alert you to a tornado warning.”

Holmes says a second round of severe is even more likely on Saturday. These storms could bring the threat of large hail and damaging winds.
