Bill seeks higher fines for taking down Confederate statues

Legislators have advanced a bill that would make it more expensive to take down Confederate monuments in Alabama.

On Tuesday the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee advanced Republican Sen. Gerald Allen's bill that would increase the fine for violating the Alabama Memorial Preservation Act. The fine would be increased from a $25,000 one-time fine to $5,000 per day.

The same committee also advanced a bill that would make damaging a historic monument during a riot a felony offense punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Both bills now move to the full Alabama Senate.
