Democratic senators step up their criticism of Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel Alito for what they say is his evasiveness on questions related to abortion, while tempers flared among senators on the Judiciary Committee.

Confirmation hearings for Alito to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the high court are in their third day.
