Ala. Veterans Aid Groups Receive $6.3 Million

Alabama community organizations that work with homeless or at-risk veterans have received more than $6.3 million in federal grants.

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the awards Tuesday as part of meeting a 2009 promise to end veteran homelessness by 2015. Nationwide, the agency announced about $300 million in grants.

The awards to Alabama organizations include: $1.3 million to Housing First, Inc. in Mobile and Baldwin counties; $2 million to United Way of Central Alabama; about $1 million to Aletheia House, Inc. in Jefferson, St. Clair and Shelby counties; and $2 million to Family Endeavors, Inc. in the Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery metro areas.

Northwest Florida Comprehensive Services for Children, which serves northwest Florida and Escambia County in Alabama, received $1.2 million.
