Alabama Senators Support Abortion Bill

By Alabama Public Radio

Washington, DC – U-S Senators Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions Tuesday voted in favor of a ban on what some call "partial birth abortions." The measure easily won final congressional approval in the Senate by a vote of 64-to-34. Groups supporting abortion rights have promised to go to court immediately to try to block the measure. They say it is the first step to rolling back 1973's Supreme Court ruling confirming a woman's right to an abortion. This is the third time Congress has approved such a ban. President Clinton twice vetoed similar bills. President Bush says he will sign the bill.
