BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The upcoming high school graduation season will present a new test of Alabama’s ability to reopen society without hastening the spread of the coronavirus.

Some of the state's largest high schools plan to hold traditional commencement exercises starting next week with crowds that could reach into the thousands. The ceremonies are allowed because the state last week eliminated rules that limited crowds to 10 people or fewer as long as social distancing is maintained.

A Health Department spokesman says maintaining 6 feet between people is a primary goal.
