A gathering in Birmingham is looking for more answers on how the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, impacts women.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham Center for AIDS Research is hosting the 2016 Joint Symposium on HIV Research in Women. The conference will bring together junior and senior HIV investigators.
Presentations will be divided among three focus areas. The list includes vulnerable Populations, how HIV impacts women infected with the virus that causes AIDS, and what medical care these patients receive.
Mary Fisher will be the keynote speaker. She is an HIV activist noted for her speeches at the 1992 and 1996 Republican Conventions.
Dr. Mirjam Kempf is a professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the School of Nursing. She says the conference may help bring more HIV researchers to the South.
“By bringing this cadre of investigators, both young and senior to UAB and Birmingham, to encourage many of them to maybe even consider UAB and Birmingham for their future careers, but also to start collaborations.”
The symposium began yesterday and will conclude with the third and final session today.
