Lawmaker to Get Update on Birmingham Pollution

(Information in the following story is from: The Birmingham News, http://www.al.com/birminghamnews )

U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell will soon get an update on environmental contamination in a North Birmingham neighborhood.

Sewell plans a meeting Monday with officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which is conducting testing in the area.

AL.com reports that EPA officials started a program in October to test for pollution at more than 1,200 properties in the Collegeville, Fairmont and Harriman Park neighborhoods. Sewell said that she hopes the EPA testing will address local concerns.

Federal officials began negotiations last year with the Walter Coke company to clean up pollution in the area. The company has agreed to clean five properties as part of an agreement.

Some residents have blamed that contamination for health problems.
