Three Rescued After Boating Collision off Alabama Coast

Three people are back on dry land after a water rescue twelve miles south of Dauphin Island. The Coast Guard and Alabama Department of Marine Resources received a report shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Friday about a collision between a catamaran with four people aboard and a pleasure craft with three people. The pleasure craft capsized and its three passengers were thrown into the water. The Alabama marine resources boat crew recovered the three survivors and transported them to emergency medical services at Billy Goat Hole. The Coast Guard boat crew escorted those in the catamaran to Dauphin Island Marina.

State Troopers and the Marine Patrol will be out in force over the Memorial Day weekend, which is considered the busiest boating weekend of the year. This week has been named boating safety week, with the state pushing a message of “be prepared.” Boaters are encouraged to use life vests, and to be sure their craft have communications equipment and a weather radio to stay alert to hazardous conditions. Alcohol is also a concern. Sixty Alabama boaters were arrested last year for operating a vessel under the influence.
