Great White Shark Added to Endangered List

The great white shark, one of the ocean's most fearsome predators, is recognized as a species decimated by excessive and unregulated trade at a convention on trade in endangered species being held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The U.N.-affiliated Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species is calling for stepped-up protection of the sharks, whose teeth and jaws can fetch tens of thousands of dollars. Trade will now be closely monitored, and may be banned altogether if great white numbers keep fading. NPR's John Nielsen reports.
