TUSCALOOSA, AL-- Even though Big Al couldn’t entertain fans in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, he still celebrated what would have been A-Day by spreading spirit throughout the Tuscaloosa community.

Big Al toured several areas of Tuscaloosa to greet fans while maintaining social distancing. Alabama fans from around the country were also able to follow the festivities via social media.

Since A-Day was canceled due to the pandemic, UA's athletic minds decided that they had to do something to raise team spirit among fans.

(TUSCALOOSA, AL)-- Alabama Men’s Basketball retired the No. 20 jersey during their 88-82 home win against 25th ranked LSU Saturday. It is the first jersey retired in any University of Alabama sport, but hardly the first time for its wearer to break ground in Tuscaloosa.

Fans of college football are still buzzing over word that Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is entering the NFL Draft. Alabama Coach Nick Saban wasted no time in singing the praises of the quarterback.

“I don’t think he’s every been in of my office one time, the whole time he’s been here, for anything but something that’s positive in terms of helping him or helping the rest of our program," Saban said.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa says being a top 10 or top 15 NFL draft pick “would be tough to pass up.”

The Crimson Tide star said Thursday as he is still weighing his options as he recovers from right hip surgery. His next big decision will be whether to return for his senior season or enter the draft.

Tagovailoa was considered a potential No. 1 overall draft pick before the Nov. 16 injury. His draft status is much less clear now.

He says doctors tell him they expect him to “play football again at 100 percent."

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s team surgeon said Tua Tagovailoa’s prognosis was “excellent” after the quarterback underwent surgery to repair a dislocated hip, although there is no timeline for Tagovailoa’s recovery.

Dr. Lyle Cain said Tagovailoa is expected to recover fully after Monday’s surgery in Houston — probably the best possible news the QB could have received about the devastating season-ending injury, which has cast a cloud over his football future.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — A towering "Baby Trump" protest balloon was knifed and deflated by someone unhappy with its appearance during President Donald Trump's Saturday trip to Alabama, organizers said.

The incident occurred during Trump's visit to watch the University of Alabama football game. The balloon, which is over 20 feet (6.1 meters) tall, was set up in a nearby park.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — President Donald Trump knew where to go Saturday for home field advantage, finding comfort in the Deep South with college football fans cheering the nation's top two teams — and him.

His reception at the showdown between Louisiana State and Alabama contrasted with the scene at Game 5 of the World Series in Washington, where was booed, and the mixed response to his appearance at a martial arts fight in New York.

Only three years ago Monte Burke published a pretty good biography, “Nick Saban: The Making of a Coach.” Coach Bryant’s life has been done in detail by Allan Barra in “The Last Coach” (2006) and by many others including Keith Dunnavant (1996) and, earlier, John Underwood (1975) in cooperation with Bryant himself.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama officials have found an opponent they can't beat: The September heat.

University President Stuart R. Bell and athletic director Greg Byrne issued a joint statement Monday complaining that the Southern Miss game on Sept. 21 has been set for 11 a.m. Central. The Crimson Tide just held a sparsely attended game against New Mexico State with a mid-afternoon kickoff and temperatures of about 95 degrees.

Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer encouraged Zach Smith to stay with the Buckeyes in January 2018 after the then-assistant coach was pursued by Alabama, according to texts messages from Meyer to Smith.

Clemson is No. 1 in the USA Today preseason coaches' poll for the first time, followed by Alabama at No. 2.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama and Wisconsin will meet in 2024 and 2025 in a home-and-home series.

The schools announced Monday the teams will play in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sept. 14, 2024. They'll meet in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Sept. 13, 2025.

Wisconsin and Alabama have split their only two meetings. The Crimson Tide won 35-17 in the 2015 opener in Arlington, Texas. That was the first time they had played each other since 1928, when the Badgers won 15-0 in Madison.

It's the fifth home-and-home series Alabama has added recently, including Texas in 2022 and 2023.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Defending Southeastern Conference champion Alabama is the favorite to once again beat Georgia in the title game in a preseason media poll.

The Crimson Tide was selected by 203 of 260 voters this week at SEC media days in results released Friday. Georgia, which lost to Alabama in the championship game last season, received 49 first-place votes.

Eight teams were picked as the SEC champion on at least one ballot.

The predicted order of finish in the West was Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Auburn, Mississippi State, Mississippi and Arkansas.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — It's easier for Alabama to be humble now.

The Crimson Tide can thank Clemson for that, at least. There's nothing like a 44-16 drubbing in the national championship game to strip away any feelings of invincibility and self-satisfaction that come from scarcely getting challenged during the regular season on the way to another Southeastern Conference title.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — It's Alabama's turn at Southeastern Conference media days.

Nick Saban takes the stage Wednesday with his team once again favored to repeat as SEC champion. But the Crimson Tide also wants to atone for how last season ended.

Alabama took the most lopsided defeat of Saban's tenure after absorbing a 44-16 drubbing from Clemson in the national championship game.

This team returns plenty of offensive firepower. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was the Heisman Trophy runner-up, and Jerry Jeudy won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top wide receiver.

Steve Flowers on Monroeville

Last week, APR commentator Steve Flowers managed a unique feat - he was able to pair state politics with the annual Iron Bowl rivalry game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers. This week, Steve does something similar. This time, it’s politics and the literary history of one Alabama town…

The Alabama Crimson Tide heads to Tennessee this weekend to play the Vols. Alabama is a state where football intertwines with just about everything, including politics. One colorful character associated with Alabama’s rivalry with Tennessee is someone who spent a lot of time running for Governor, and a lot of time losing. APR Political Commentator Steve Flowers takes it from there…
