A teenager charged with capital murder is seeking a youthful-offender status in his case.

The hearing for William Johnson is set for next Monday. If granted, the status would limit prison time to a maximum of three years.

Johnson was 18 when accused of shooting Lowndes County Sheriff John Williams Sr. in the face and killing him as the sheriff was attempting to disperse loiterers at a Hayneville gas station in November 2019.


ELKMONT, Ala. (AP) — A 15-year-old boy charged with killing five members of his family, including  three younger siblings, is being charged as an adult. 

Mason Sisk, of Elkmont, faces four counts of capital murder, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office said. Authorities released his name for the first time following the decision to charge him as an adult.


HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A north Alabama county is delaying all capital murder trials because of the pandemic.

Attorneys typically call a larger-than-normal number of potential jurors for capital cases. The presiding judge in Madison County, Ruth Ann Hall, says the courthouse in Huntsville doesn't have enough space to allow for proper social distancing in those instances. So capital cases will be on hold until 2021.



COKER, Ala. (AP) — Authorities in Alabama say a man has been charged with capital murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 19-month-old child.

The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says it obtained a warrant for 31-year-old John Thompson on the charge Tuesday.

HAYNEVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The attorneys for an 18-year-old charged with capital murder in the slaying of an Alabama sheriff are requesting his release on bond as court proceedings remain delayed amid the coronavirus pandemic. 


MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The former boyfriend of an Alabama police officer is charged with capital murder in her shooting death. 

Montgomery police say 24-year-old Brandon Deshawn Webster is accused of killing detective Tanisha Pughsley at her home early Monday. Authorities described the slaying as occurring during a domestic dispute.


PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Jury selection has been stopped amid juror misconduct in the trial of an Alabama man charged with killing three people during a robbery attempt.

Circuit Judge Bill Lewis Jr. said Tuesday the selection process in Keon Cain's trial will have to be reset. He says juror interviews revealed one juror discussed the case with fellow jurors potentially compromising the trial. He was sentenced to five days in jail for contempt of court.

An Alabama judge has dismissed a kidnapping charge against one of the three men arrested in the disappearance of a UFC heavyweight fighter’s stepdaughter who was later found slain.

A Lee County judge dismissed the charge Tuesday against 35-year-old Antwain Shamar Fisher in the case of 19-year-old Aniah Blanchard. A motion presented by the assistant district attorney said an investigation revealed Fisher was not present during Blanchard's abduction.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty against a man being charged with capital murder in the shooting death of the stepdaughter of a well-known UFC fighter, authorities announced Monday.

Lee County District Attorney Brandon Hughes said at a news conference that the capital murder charge is being filed against 29-year-old Ibraheem Yazeed in the death of Aniah Blanchard, a 19-year-old Alabama college student and stepdaughter of UFC fighter Walt Harris.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — State prosecutors have filed court documents saying they intend to seek the death penalty against the suspected killer of an Alabama police officer.

Marco Perez is charged with capital murder in the January death of 30-year-old Mobile Police Officer Sean Tuder. Authorities have said Tuder was shot during a struggle with Perez.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Hundreds of people packed an Alabama church to overflowing Sunday for the funeral of a girl who police say was killed after being kidnapped from a birthday party.

The funeral of 3-year-old Kamille McKinney was held at the New Beginning Christian Ministry in Birmingham. That 700-seat church is less than 10 miles (16 kilometers) from a public housing project where the girl, also known as "Cupcake," was abducted Oct. 12. A fellowship hall was used to seat a large overflow crowd amid a program marked by tears, somber prayer and joyous gospel music.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A funeral service is set for this weekend for a 3-year-old Alabama girl who was abducted from a birthday party and asphyxiated, and officials said Friday they are establishing a permanent reward fund in her memory.

The service for Kamille McKinney was scheduled for Sunday afternoon, with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The child's body was found amid garbage this week 10 days after she disappeared.

WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man arrested in the stabbing death of a good Samaritan now faces a capital murder charge.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that a grand jury recently indicted 32-year-old Ronald Jason Mann, of Elmore County in the death of 47-year-old Davon Waldrep, also of Elmore County.
