MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama school board wants to rename three high schools that honor men who played roles in the Confederacy. 

The Montgomery County Board of Education voted Tuesday to change the names of high schools honoring Gen. Robert E. Lee, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and poet Sidney Lanier, who served in the rebel army. The board must now get a waiver of a state law guarding Confederate memorials or pay a $25,000 fine for each renaming.

 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The mayor of Alabama's largest city is banning the use of chokeholds by police following the police killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.

Mayor Randall Woodfin announced the ban on Tuesday during a continuing review of city policies. He also issued new guidelines that say city police now have a duty to intervene anytime they see a fellow officer using excessive force.

 

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Plans are being developed to paint a Black Lives Matter mural in an Alabama city’s downtown. 

The Tuscaloosa News reported on Monday that the City Council voted in favor of adding the temporary artwork to a downtown street adjacent to the city’s government plaza.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama police chief says one of his officers has been fired after posting a photo on social media that depicted a protester in the crosshairs of a rifle scope. 

Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis says former Officer Ryan Snow was fired Friday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Charges of inciting a riot have been dropped against an Alabama comedian who spoke at a rally following the police killing of George Floyd and was accused of helping spark unrest in Birmingham. 

Jermaine “FunnyMaine” Johnson was arrested on the misdemeanor charge and released after posting $500 bond.

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (AP) — Officials in a majority black county say they hope to permanently remove a now-covered Confederate memorial erected more than a century ago in the town square. 

Macon County Commission Chairman Louis Maxwell said at a news conference Friday that officials are researching ways to move the statue that sits in the town square of Tuskegee. Crews covered up the base of the statue after it was vandalized with anti-Ku Klux Klan graffiti last week.

 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama comedian who spoke at a rally following the police killing of George Floyd was arrested on a charge of inciting a riot by police who contend he helped spark a night of unrest in Birmingham. 

An attorney for Jermaine Johnson says he surrendered to police on the misdemeanor charge on Tuesday and paid a $500 bond. The lawyer says Johnson is not guilty.

 

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A historically black school in Alabama is establishing a scholarship to honor two black men who were killed by police. 

Alabama State University in Montgomery says the scholarship will be named for George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis. It will also honor Greg Gunn, who was shot to death by a police officer in Montgomery in 2016. Gunn once attended classes at Alabama State.

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama police chief says out-of-town anarchists escalated tensions during a demonstration that led to police using tear gas and rubber bullets on the crowd. 

Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray said at a Thursday news conference that some people in the crowd were prepared to fight officers at the Wednesday night demonstration in downtown Huntsville.

TROY, Ala. (AP) — A university police chief has been suspended from work in Alabama over his comments about the death of George Floyd in Minnesota. 

Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins says in a statement that a social media post by John McCall was inflammatory. Hawkins says the school condemns McCall's comments, which included a claim that Floyd played a role his own death.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Police in northern Alabama appeared to use smoke and pepper spray, or another chemical agent, to sweep protesters out of the courthouse square in Huntsville. 

Video of the chaotic scene streamed by WHNT, WAFF and other media outlets showed law enforcement agents wearing gas masks and riot gear advancing on the crowd after protesters refused an order to leave the area.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Confederate monuments are once again coming down in the South. 

Relics of the Old South have been removed from public display in at least three states amid continuing protests over the police killing of George Floyd in Minnesota. In Alabama, crews working overnight took down a huge stone monument in a park in downtown Birmingham. 

 

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Police said 20 people were arrested at a weekend protest near Hoover City Hall while demonstrating against the death of George Floyd in Minnesota. 

Hoover police Lt. Keith Czeskleba told WBRC-TV most of Saturday's arrests resulted in disorderly conduct charges after protesters blocked traffic on a highway. Other charges included criminal trespass and resisting arrest, and one person was charged with carrying a firearm during a demonstration.
